  • Course
    1. Newport Bridge
    2. Jamestown Bridge
    3. Mt. Hope Bridge
  • Gambled on the wind filling from the South/SW first, in conflict with all the course runs on Expedition and HRR weather/Tide Tech.
  • Headed to the east edge of the bay and sailed south towards the Newport Bridge, trying to stay out of the current as much as possible in the lee of the navy breakwater, etc. Looking at the boats headed to Jamestown Bridge first it looked like they were headed to Warwick with no wind and lots of current. Wind started to fill right as we turned at the Newport Bridge. We carried the breeze and current back to the north edge of Jamestown, then short-tacked up the west side of Jamestown, trying to stay out of the adverse current to the Jamestown bridge. Then headed to Mt. Hope Bridge with a bit of current with us, then slack, then slack/favorable current back to PI and the finish. Phew.

SPIRIT RACE REPORT

Spirit crew:

  • Commodore Robyn
  • Mike Marrone
  • Linda Barbour
  • Mark Reinhart
  • Mark Boivin
  • EC Helme

We went:

  • Mt Hope
  • Newport
  • Jamestown

Saw breeze approaching from north and went that way first to get it.  The wind never really filled in from that direction which made that direction a bit of a slog.  Favorable current headed there but a bit of a fight getting back south.  At Newport bridge picked up a fresh breeze which moved us back north under kite and with current.  Turned the corner around the north tip of Jamestown and found a westerly which we used to fetch Jamestown bridge.  Tight fetch back north followed by a really fresh breeze out of the north that got us back to the finish line.  Long day!
